La topographie est l’art de traduire le monde en lignes et en courbes, la science qui mesure et représente sur un plan les formes visibles du terrain, qu’elles soient naturelles ou façonnées par l’homme. Elle révèle les reliefs, les couches successives, les strates qui s’empilent comme des pages d’un livre ancien, les niveaux qui dessinent des plateaux en escaliers. Par sa précision mathématique, héritée de la géodésie, elle saisit la forme même de la Terre.
